Dear Adam:

Question--Should we continue to always use the "take a break" to release her from the "down-stay" command or can we use the "come" command without "take a break" following the "down-stay" command or can both of these scenarios be used??

[This question is a follow up from a section I wrote about in my book, which you can read more about at: http://weekly-tips.com/dog-training/dogproblems ]

Dear Barbara:

One command supersedes the next. So, if the dog is in the sit position, I don't need to tell him to "Take a Break,' and THEN tell him to "Lay down," .... I just give the command, "Down."

In other words, you only need to use the "Take A Break" command to tell the dog that "work time" is over and he can take a breather.
